Melvin Van Peebles has found success in every aspect of the entertainment world as a director, producer, writer, and composer. After graduation from college and a stint in the Air Force, he moved to Paris in the '60s, where he had five novels published, one of which became the basis of his debut feature in the 1976 film, "The Story of a Three-Day Pass," which was selected as the French entry in the San Francisco Film Festival. Returning to the U.S., he directed the comedy, "Watermelon Man," and later used the money he earned from this project to finance "Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song," a film which he produced, directed and starred in, which drew an X-rating and became a cause celebre during the early '70s. He later wrote the book, words and music for the Broadway show, "Ain't Supposed to Die a Natural Death," which garnered seven Tony nominations. With his son, actor/director Mario, he produced the feature "Identity Crisis." Additional acting credits include "Boomerang" and "Posse."
