Los Angeles native Mick Garris took a varied and circuitous route to become a filmmaker. After a stint as a rock performer, he took his first film job as a receptionist at George Lucas' Lucasfilm, and later became the operator of the R2-D2 robot at public appearances. He then became a publicist for Lucasfilm, as well as Avco Embassy Pictures and Universal Pictures. It was in the latter job that he made several behind-the-scenes documentaries that brought him to the attention of Steven Spielberg. Spielberg got him the job of story editor on "Amazing Stories," and his scripts won several awards. He also directed several episodes of the popular series. Working for Spielberg again, he wrote the screenplay for "batteries not included." He then wrote the sequel to "The Fly," and directed "Critters 2: The Main Course" and "Psycho IV." He also directed "Stephen King's Sleepwalkers" and the miniseries, "Stephen King's The Stand."
