A scientist goes in search of a monster terrorizing the high seas, but instead finds a submarine of untold power called The Nautilus, and the brilliant, enigmatic man who built it, Captain Nemo (Michael Caine), in "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea," an "ABC Miniseries" inspired by the visionary Jules Verne adventure, airing SUNDAY, MAY 11, and MONDAY, MAY 12 (9:00-11:00 p.m., ET, both nights), on the ABC Television Network.

The time: Shortly after America's Civil War. Young oceanographer Pierre Arronax (Dempsey), haunted by a rivalry with his overbearing scientist father, sets sail with The Abraham Lincoln, an American frigate, to investigate a series of attacks on ships. Arronax hopes to prove his theory that the menace is an undiscovered sea creature. But after the frigate is attacked, he learns the "monster" is in fact The Nautilus, a submarine. At the helm is Captain Nemo, the brutal genius who built the ship and whose true home is the sea itself. Arronax, his companion Cabe Attucks (Adewale), and whaler Ned Land (Brown) are taken captive.

The three unwillingly undertake a deep-water odyssey that leads them from the ominous mysteries of the ocean's depths to the fabled ruins of the lost city of Atlantis. As the journey continues, they discover Nemo's ultimate motive -- to create a new utopia beneath the ocean. But building the underwater city could prove a threat to all those on the Earth above. Amidst the adventure, Arronax finds himself drawn into a forbidden love with Nemo's reclusive daughter, Mara (Sara), whom the captain has kept hidden away aboard The Nautilus.
